On the afternoon of April 22, Army medic and two-tour Iraq veteran David "Doc" Stewart gunned down his girlfriend Kristy Sampels and fatally shot himself on I-5 just south of Tumwater after a state trooper pulled him over for speeding after a lengthy chase. Hours earlier, Stewart's 5-year-old son Jordan was asphyxiated with a plastic bag over his head at the family's home in Spanaway. Investigators discovered a jar of Lady Bubbles "bath salts," a powerful stimulant chemically similar to methamphetamine and snorted like cocaine, in Stewart's pocket. Yesterday, toxicology results from the Thurston County Coroner confirmed that both Stewart and Sampels were high on the drug at the time of their deaths.

What a horrible tragedy. A soldier with the 82nd Airborne, a beautiful young lady and an adorable little boy.

I personally blame the PTSD as much as the drug. The two combined were obviously a deadly combination.

If our troops had easier access to the help they need and deserve and if this crap had never made it to the marketplace in the first place, 3 wonderful lives would have been saved.

How the hell can someone suffocate any five year old kid with a plastic bag, let alone their own son?!

Those bath salts must be some wicked stuff, I'm glad they have been banned. However, the Junkies will just find something else to snort.

It's hard to blame it all on the junkie. Some chemist, somewhere, had to have created this class of products. Then someone had to decide how best to market and distribute it (apparently as 'bath salts'), etc.

The best thing that the government can do is to treat really harmful drugs differently than marijuana. The fact that they treat marijuana the same as meth and cocaine teaches young people one very bad lesson: "the government doesn't know what the F it's talking about when it comes to drugs, and so everything it says about the subject should be treated accordingly".

When is Uncle Sam going to approach the classification of drugs with a little bit of reason? If they can move this quickly to ban a new, dangerous drug, why can't they get their head out of their asses to legitimize medical marijuana, thus creating a whole new crop (pun intended) of industry as well as a tax base - oh yeah, and allow people to get their damn medication!
